Overview

PD01B is an AFFITOPE-based active immunotherapy candidate designed for the treatment of idiopathic Parkinson's disease. It consists of a short synthetic peptide (mimetope) that mimics the epitope of pathological alpha-synuclein (α-syn), coupled to a carrier protein and adsorbed to an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant. The vaccine is intended to stimulate the patient's immune system to produce specific antibodies that recognize and neutralize toxic α-synuclein aggregates, which are a hallmark of Parkinson's disease pathology. By promoting the clearance of these aggregates, PD01B aims to slow or stop the progression of neurodegeneration. Originally developed by AFFiRiS AG, the program was acquired by AC Immune S.A. in 2021. Clinical studies have demonstrated that PD01B is safe and well-tolerated, showing a sustained antibody response and potential clinical benefit in patients with early-stage Parkinson's disease.
