Overview

pdpSC18 is a therapeutic DNA plasmid vaccine developed by PowderMed (later acquired by Pfizer) for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B infection. The vaccine is designed to be administered via the PowderJect ND10 delivery system, which utilizes Particle Mediated Epidermal Delivery (PMED) technology. This "gene gun" approach delivers DNA-coated gold microparticles directly into the epidermal layer of the skin, where the DNA is taken up by cells and expressed to elicit a cellular and humoral immune response against the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The vaccine specifically targets HBV antigens, such as the surface antigen (HBsAg) and core antigen (HBcAg), with the goal of breaking immune tolerance in chronic carriers and stimulating T-cell mediated viral clearance. Development of the program was discontinued following Pfizer's acquisition of PowderMed and a subsequent shift in their vaccine strategy.
