Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Peach kernel refers to the dried ripe seed of the fruit of Prunus persica (peach) or sometimes Prunus davidiana. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is known as Tao Ren and is classified as an herb that invigorates blood and dispels stasis. It is used for conditions such as irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, constipation due to dryness in the intestines, abdominal pain from blood stasis or trauma, lung abscesses and intestinal abscesses. Peach kernel contains various bioactive compounds including β-sitosterol (a phytosterol), quercetin and luteolin (flavonoids). These compounds are thought to exert effects by modulating multiple biological targets; for example quercetin and luteolin may activate the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway relevant in liver fibrosis[1][3]. Peach kernel also has a moistening effect on the intestines and can relieve coughing[3][4]. In Western contexts it may be found as an extract or oil used primarily as a flavoring agent or adjuvant in foods[2].
