Overview

Peanut protein refers to the allergenic proteins derived from *Arachis hypogaea* (peanuts), used therapeutically in allergen immunotherapy to induce desensitization and increase the threshold of allergic reactivity in individuals with peanut allergy. The treatment involves the gradual administration of increasing doses of peanut protein, which modulates the immune response by decreasing peanut-specific IgE levels and increasing peanut-specific IgG4 levels. This process aims to prevent severe systemic reactions, including anaphylaxis, following accidental exposure. The most well-known pharmaceutical formulation is Palforzia (peanut allergen powder-dnfp), developed by Aimmune Therapeutics. Additionally, clinical evidence from the LEAP (Learning Early about Peanut Allergy) trial supports the early introduction of dietary peanut protein in high-risk infants as a strategy to prevent the development of peanut allergy.
