Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pearl millet is a cereal grain from the grass species Cenchrus americanus (synonyms Pennisetum glaucum, Pennisetum americanum), widely cultivated for food and forage. It is the most drought-resistant major cereal; its grain contains notable concentrations of protein, dietary fiber, iron, zinc, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and B vitamins such as thiamine, niacin, and riboflavin. Pearl millet is naturally gluten-free and has a low glycemic index, making it suitable for those with celiac disease and diabetes. In traditional medicine and diets, it is used to support cardiovascular health, metabolic health, digestion, cholesterol regulation, and to provide antioxidants. It does not act via a classic "mechanism of action" as a pharmaceutical, but exerts physiological benefits primarily through its nutritional content and functional food properties[1][2][4][6][10].
