Overview

PEC-01 is a stem cell-derived therapy consisting of pluripotent stem cell-derived pancreatic endoderm cells (pancreatic progenitor cells). Developed by ViaCyte (now part of Vertex Pharmaceuticals), these cells are designed to be implanted into patients with type 1 diabetes, where they mature into functional, insulin-producing islet cells that respond to physiological glucose levels. PEC-01 is typically delivered via a macroencapsulation device, such as the Encaptra (VC-01/PEC-Encap) or a direct vascularization device (VC-02/PEC-Direct). The goal is to provide a scalable and renewable alternative to cadaveric islet transplantation, potentially restoring glycemic control without the need for chronic exogenous insulin.
