PEC-Direct is an investigational cell therapy designed as a potential islet cell replacement treatment for high-risk type 1 diabetes. The therapy consists of a device containing millions of stem cell-derived pancreatic endoderm (PEC-01) cells that are implanted into the patient. Once implanted, these cells mature into insulin-producing beta-like cells capable of regulating blood glucose levels. The device allows direct vascularization—meaning blood vessels can grow into the device and contact the transplanted cells—enabling them to sense glucose and secrete insulin in response. Because the host immune system would otherwise attack these foreign cells, patients must take immunosuppressive drugs alongside this therapy. PEC-Direct aims to provide a long-term source of endogenous insulin for people with type 1 diabetes who are at high risk for severe hypoglycemia or glycemic instability[1][4][5][6][7].
