Overview

PEC‑Encap is an encapsulated human pancreatic progenitor cell therapy developed by ViaCyte (now a subsidiary of Vertex Pharmaceuticals). The product consists of stem cell-derived pancreatic progenitor cells (PEC‑01) loaded into the Encaptra drug delivery system, which acts as an immunoprotective device. When implanted subcutaneously, the encapsulated cells are designed to mature into functional pancreatic endocrine cells—including insulin-producing beta cells—potentially providing a source of endogenous insulin for patients with type 1 diabetes. The encapsulation aims to protect the transplanted cells from immune rejection, eliminating or reducing the need for immunosuppression. Clinical development has focused on type 1 diabetes mellitus; however, challenges with engraftment and efficacy have led to trial terminations and discontinuation of further development[1][4][5][6][7].
