Overview

Pectin oligosaccharides are **short-chain carbohydrates derived from the enzymatic or chemical breakdown of pectin**, a polysaccharide present in the cell walls of many fruits, particularly citrus and apples. They are classified as **non-digestible oligosaccharides** with pronounced prebiotic properties, selectively promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. Through fermentation in the colon, they produce short-chain fatty acids, which confer diverse health benefits, including inhibition of pathogenic bacteria, constipation relief, reduction in blood glucose and lipid levels, improved mineral absorption, and modulation of the immune system. Experimental and pre-clinical data indicate that pectin oligosaccharides exert **antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antitumor, anti-obesity, antibacterial, and antitoxic activities**. In particular, they can induce apoptosis in human colonic adenocarcinoma cells, suggesting a potential role in colon cancer therapy. Additional studied uses include support for cardiovascular health, treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia. They are considered safe, non-mutagenic, and suitable for inclusion in functional foods and supplements[1][2][5].
