Pecto-intercostal fascial plane block (PIFPB) is a regional anesthesia technique utilized for postoperative analgesia, particularly in patients undergoing cardiac surgery via median sternotomy. The procedure involves the ultrasound-guided injection of a local anesthetic, such as bupivacaine (Marcaine), into the fascial plane between the pectoralis major and the external intercostal muscles. This targets the anterior cutaneous branches of the intercostal nerves (T2-T6), effectively blocking pain signals from the sternal area. Medipol University has conducted clinical research to evaluate the efficacy of PIFPB, often in conjunction with the recto-intercostal fascial plane block (RIFPB), to provide comprehensive analgesia for both the sternotomy incision and the sites of mediastinal or thoracic tube placement, thereby reducing the need for systemic opioids and improving patient recovery.
