Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pedialyte is an oral electrolyte solution developed by Abbott Laboratories, designed to prevent dehydration and replenish essential fluids and electrolytes lost during illness, such as diarrhea or vomiting. Originally introduced to hospitals in 1966, it is formulated with a precise balance of dextrose (sugar) and electrolytes (sodium and potassium) to facilitate optimal absorption in the small intestine via the sodium-glucose cotransport mechanism. While primarily marketed for pediatric use, it is also widely used by adults for rehydration. It is available over-the-counter in various forms, including ready-to-drink liquids, powders, and freezer pops.
