Overview

Pediococcus acidilactici CE51 is a specific probiotic strain of lactic acid bacteria investigated for its potential therapeutic effects in inflammatory bowel diseases, particularly ulcerative colitis. In preclinical murine models of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis, the administration of this strain (often via a food matrix like orange juice) has demonstrated the ability to attenuate intestinal inflammation, reduce splenomegaly, and positively modulate the gut microbiota composition. Its mechanism involves maintaining the balance of the phylum Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes and promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus helveticus. While it does not significantly alter systemic markers like serum TNF-α or C-reactive protein in some studies, its local effects on the intestinal mucosa suggest a protective role against colitis-induced damage.
