Overview

Pediococcus acidilactici CECT9879, also known by the code name pA1c, is a probiotic bacterial strain (and its heat-inactivated postbiotic form pA1c®HI) developed for the management of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. The strain works by modulating the gut microbiota—specifically increasing the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila and reducing Prevotella—and regulating the insulin/IGF-1 signaling pathway. In preclinical models, it has demonstrated the ability to improve glucose tolerance, reduce visceral adiposity, and decrease the expression of proinflammatory cytokines like monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1). It also enhances the expression of glucose transporters GLUT-1 and GLUT-4. The postbiotic form retains metabolic efficacy even after high-heat processing, making it suitable for incorporation into functional foods.
