Overview

Pediococcus pentosaceus CECT 8330 (also known as KABP041) is a gram-positive, non-spore-forming, live probiotic bacterium. [1] It was originally isolated from the fecal samples of healthy infants and is developed by AB-Biotics S/A. [2] The strain has Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) status from the European Food Safety Authority. [6] As a probiotic, it modulates the composition of gut microbiota and associated immune responses rather than acting on a single molecular target. Preclinical studies in models of colitis have shown that it can reduce levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, while increasing the production of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. [9] Clinical trials have investigated its efficacy, often in combination with Bifidobacterium longum CECT 7894, for treating infantile colic and excessive crying syndrome, where it has shown a trend towards reducing crying time. [1, 4] The strain is deposited in the Spanish Coleccion Espanola de Cultivos Tipo (CECT) under the accession number CECT 8330.
