Overview

PEG-catalase is a PEGylated formulation of the antioxidant enzyme catalase, which catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) into water and oxygen. By conjugating catalase with polyethylene glycol (PEG), the enzyme's circulating half-life is significantly prolonged and its immunogenicity is reduced. Originally developed as a therapeutic candidate by Enzon and Sterling in the late 1980s and early 1990s, PEG-catalase was investigated for various conditions involving oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated tissue injury, such as acute respiratory failure, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and inflammation. However, it did not advance to clinical trials or commercial approval and is currently used primarily as a research reagent to study redox biology, oxidative stress, and cellular signaling pathways.
