Overview

Peg-erythropoietin (marketed as Perythro) is a PEGylated recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) developed by the Iranian biotechnology company Pooyesh Darou. As a biosimilar of methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta (Mircera), it consists of an erythropoietin protein covalently linked to a polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer. This modification significantly extends the drug's half-life, allowing for a reduced dosing frequency (typically once every two to four weeks) compared to non-PEGylated erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. Peg-erythropoietin acts as an agonist of the erythropoietin receptor (EPOR), stimulating the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow. It is approved and marketed for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in both dialysis and non-dialysis patients.
