PEG-TiO2 refers to a nanomedicine platform consisting of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles functionalized with polyethylene glycol (PEG). Titanium dioxide is a semiconductor material investigated for its photocatalytic properties in photodynamic and sonodynamic therapies, where it generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon activation to induce cancer cell death. However, bare TiO2 nanoparticles often exhibit toxicity and poor biocompatibility. The addition of a PEG coating (PEGylation) masks the nanoparticle surface, reducing cytotoxicity, improving stability in biological fluids, and providing functional groups (such as carboxylic acids) for the attachment of targeting ligands. In experimental models of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), PEG-TiO2 nanoparticles have been conjugated with monoclonal antibodies targeting the Kv 11.1 potassium channel to achieve tumor-specific internalization and therapeutic delivery.
