Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Peganum harmala extract is a botanical extract derived from the seeds, roots, or leaves of the *Peganum harmala* plant (commonly known as Syrian rue or Harmal). It contains active beta-carboline alkaloids, primarily harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine, which act as reversible inhibitors of monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). The extract has been investigated for various pharmacological properties, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and psychoactive effects. In recent research, chitosan nanoparticles loaded with *Peganum harmala* extract have been studied for their antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against multidrug-resistant *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* isolates from cystic fibrosis patients, demonstrating potential in downregulating quorum-sensing genes and controlling chronic lung infections.
