PEGDE-crosslinked hyaluronic acid hydrogel is an injectable soft tissue filler designed for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, specifically nasolabial folds. This formulation utilizes polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) as a crosslinking agent, which serves as an alternative to the more common 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDDE). The use of PEGDE is intended to enhance the biocompatibility and stability of the hydrogel, potentially reducing the risk of delayed inflammatory responses and improving tissue integration. The hydrogel works by providing immediate physical volume restoration and structural support to the dermis, while the crosslinking ensures resistance to enzymatic degradation by endogenous hyaluronidase, thereby extending the duration of the aesthetic effect. Clinical development of this specific filler has been led by Bloomage Biotech in collaboration with major clinical centers such as Peking University First Hospital.
