Overview

PegHeberon (peginterferon alfa-2b) is a pegylated formulation of recombinant interferon alpha-2b developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Cuba. It consists of interferon alpha-2b covalently linked to a 12 kDa monomethoxy-polyethylene glycol (PEG) moiety, which significantly extends the drug's half-life compared to non-pegylated interferon, allowing for once-weekly subcutaneous administration. The drug functions as an agonist of the type I interferon receptor (IFNAR), initiating a JAK-STAT signaling pathway that induces the expression of antiviral proteins and modulates the host immune response. In the context of clinical research in Bangladesh, PegHeberon was utilized as the standard-of-care control arm in a Phase III trial comparing its efficacy against the therapeutic vaccine NASVAC for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB).
