Overview
Peginterferon alfa-1b is a type I interferon that has been chemically modified by the addition of polyethylene glycol (pegylation) to improve its pharmacokinetic properties, such as increasing its half-life and stability in the body. Like other pegylated interferons, it acts as an antiviral and immunomodulatory agent. Peginterferons bind to human type 1 interferon receptors (IFNAR1/2), activating the JAK/STAT signaling pathway, which leads to increased expression of genes involved in innate antiviral responses and immune regulation. This class of drugs is primarily used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C infection, often in combination with other antivirals such as ribavirin[5][6]. Pegylation allows for less frequent dosing compared to non-pegylated forms.
