Overview

Peginterferon alfa-2a is a modified form of recombinant human interferon used primarily to treat chronic hepatitis B and C infections. It works by stimulating the body's immune system to fight against viral infections by decreasing the amount of virus in the body. Peginterferon alfa-2a is a covalent conjugate of recombinant interferon alfa-2a with polyethylene glycol (PEG). The PEG component helps the interferon stay active in the body for a longer period of time. It works by binding to human type 1 interferon receptors, which activates the janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway, inducing the body's innate antiviral response.
