peginterferon alfa-2a (specifically the YPEG-IFNα-2a formulation) is a pegylated recombinant interferon alpha-2a developed by BioGeneric Pharma. It consists of the cytokine interferon alpha-2a conjugated to a unique Y-shaped polyethylene glycol (PEG) moiety, which is intended to enhance its pharmacokinetic profile, stability, and in vivo activity compared to traditional linear-PEG formulations. The drug exerts its effects by binding to the type I interferon receptor (IFNAR), a heterodimeric receptor composed of IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 subunits. This binding activates the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, leading to the induction of various interferon-stimulated genes that provide antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory responses. YPEG-IFNα-2a has been primarily investigated in clinical trials for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, often administered in combination with ribavirin, particularly in the Egyptian patient population.
