Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Peginterferon alfa-2a + lamivudine is a combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Peginterferon alfa-2a is a pegylated form of interferon alpha, an immunomodulatory cytokine that enhances the host immune response against viral infections by inducing antiviral proteins and modulating immune cell activity. Lamivudine is a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that inhibits HBV DNA polymerase, thereby suppressing viral replication. The combination has been studied in both HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative chronic hepatitis B patients, showing higher rates of virologic and serologic response compared to lamivudine monotherapy, though not significantly superior to peginterferon alfa-2a monotherapy in terms of sustained post-treatment response[1][2][3][5]. Adverse events are generally consistent with those known for interferon-based therapies, including flu-like symptoms and psychiatric effects.
