Overview
Peginterferon alfa-2b is a synthetic (recombinant) form of interferon alpha conjugated with polyethylene glycol to extend its half-life. It acts as an immunomodulatory and antiviral agent by binding to human type 1 interferon receptors (IFNAR1 and IFNAR2), activating the JAK/STAT signaling pathway. This leads to increased expression of genes involved in the innate antiviral response and inhibition of viral replication. Peginterferon alfa-2b is primarily used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C infection in combination with ribavirin or other agents in patients who have not previously received interferons. It is also approved for use as adjuvant therapy to reduce recurrence risk after surgical removal of malignant melanoma[1][3][4]. The drug has been largely replaced by direct acting antivirals for hepatitis C but remains relevant in certain clinical settings.
