Peginterferon alfa-2b + nucleoside analogue is a combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C. Peginterferon alfa-2b is a pegylated recombinant form of interferon alpha, which acts as an immunomodulatory cytokine to enhance the host antiviral response. Nucleoside analogues (NAs) such as entecavir, tenofovir, or lamivudine are small molecule antivirals that inhibit viral DNA polymerase/reverse transcriptase, thereby suppressing viral replication. The combination aims to increase rates of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) clearance and seroconversion in chronic hepatitis B patients—especially those with low HBsAg levels—and can also be used in chronic hepatitis C regimens. Clinical studies show that this add-on or concurrent strategy may improve virologic outcomes compared to monotherapy with either agent[2][6][8]. Peginterferon alfa-2b is administered by subcutaneous injection; nucleoside analogues are given orally.
