Overview

Peginterferon alfacon-1 is a bio-engineered type I interferon alpha that has been PEGylated (chemically attached to polyethylene glycol chains) to improve its pharmacokinetic properties. It is FDA-approved for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C infection. The drug acts by binding to type I interferon receptors (IFNAR1 and IFNAR2), activating the JAK/STAT signaling pathway, which leads to upregulation of hundreds of interferon-stimulated genes with antiviral and immunomodulatory effects. These actions result in increased presentation of viral antigens, activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes, inhibition of viral replication, and modulation of immune responses[1][2][6][8].
