Peginterferon alfacon-2 is a synthetic, pegylated form of interferon alfa designed to enhance the pharmacokinetic properties of the native protein. It is a recombinant type I interferon produced in Escherichia coli and chemically modified with polyethylene glycol (PEG) to prolong its half-life and improve dosing convenience. Peginterferon alfacon-2 exerts its antiviral effects by binding to type I interferon receptors on cell surfaces, activating the JAK/STAT signaling pathway, which leads to increased expression of genes involved in antiviral defense and immune modulation. The drug was primarily developed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C infection but has largely been replaced by newer direct acting antivirals due to superior efficacy and tolerability profiles.
