Overview
Peginterferon beta is a PEGylated recombinant human interferon-beta conjugate (specifically interferon-beta-1b) developed by Mountain View Pharmaceuticals in partnership with Schering AG (later acquired by Bayer) as a potential long-acting treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS). By covalently attaching polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymers to interferon-beta-1b, the conjugate is designed to extend the drug's half-life, improve stability, and reduce immunogenicity compared to conventional, non-PEGylated interferon-beta therapies. This modification allows for less frequent dosing and potentially improved tolerability. The drug acts as an agonist of the Type I interferon receptor (comprising IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 subunits), modulating immune responses and reducing neuroinflammation in MS. The compound has remained in the preclinical or early licensing stage.
