peginterferon beta-1a

Peginterferon beta-1a is a pegylated, recombinant form of interferon beta used as an immunomodulatory therapy for adults with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. It consists of interferon beta‑1a covalently attached to a linear polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecule, which prolongs its half-life and allows for less frequent dosing compared to nonpegylated forms. The drug acts by modulating the immune response, reducing inflammation in the central nervous system, and decreasing nerve damage associated with MS. Peginterferon beta‑1a was developed by Biogen and first approved in 2014 for subcutaneous use; intramuscular administration was later approved[3][5][6][8].
