Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Peginterferon lambda-1 is a pegylated recombinant form of human interferon lambda-1 (also known as interleukin-29 or IL-29) developed by Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. It functions as an agonist for the Type III interferon receptor complex, which is composed of the IFNLR1 and IL10RB subunits. Unlike Type I interferons (such as interferon-alpha), the receptors for Type III interferons are primarily expressed on epithelial cells and hepatocytes, which potentially limits systemic exposure and reduces the incidence of flu-like symptoms and hematologic toxicities. The therapeutic consists of the recombinant protein conjugated to a 20 kDa polyethylene glycol (PEG) moiety, resulting in a total molecular weight of approximately 62 kDa and a significantly extended circulating half-life. It is primarily investigated for the treatment of chronic viral infections, specifically hepatitis B and hepatitis C.
