Overview

Pegloticase is a PEGylated recombinant uricase enzyme that functions by converting uric acid into allantoin, a water-soluble and easily excretable compound. This mechanism effectively lowers serum uric acid levels. It is indicated for the treatment of chronic refractory gout in adult patients. The drug was originally developed by Savient Pharmaceuticals and later acquired by Horizon Therapeutics, which was subsequently acquired by Amgen, making Amgen the current developer and manufacturer.
