Overview

Pegylated darbepoetin beta is a **long-acting erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA)** that is chemically a pegylated (polyethylene glycol-conjugated) form of darbepoetin beta—a recombinant protein analog of human erythropoietin. Pegylation extends the half-life and stability of the molecule, allowing for less frequent dosing. Like other ESAs, it **stimulates erythropoiesis** by binding to the erythropoietin (EPO) receptor on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, promoting red blood cell formation. This form was developed to treat anemia associated with **chronic kidney disease** and other causes. Pegylated darbepoetin beta was developed by Biocad Medical and is under clinical development, with the highest R&D phase being Phase 3 for anemia and chronic kidney failure[5].
