Overview

Pegylated granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (PEG-GM-CSF) is a long-acting recombinant cytokine developed by Mountain View Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with Duke University. The molecule consists of the GM-CSF protein covalently conjugated to polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains using Mountain View's proprietary PEGylation technology. This modification is intended to increase the hydrodynamic radius of the cytokine, thereby reducing renal clearance and extending its circulating half-life, while potentially masking the protein from immune recognition to reduce immunogenicity. Like its non-pegylated counterpart, PEG-GM-CSF acts as an agonist at the GM-CSF receptor, stimulating the production, differentiation, and activation of neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages. Although GM-CSF analogs are typically developed for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia or to support myeloid recovery after bone marrow transplantation, this specific pegylated version has primarily been documented as a preclinical research-stage molecule.
