This combination therapy was investigated by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and the prevention or reversal of liver fibrosis, particularly in patients with a history of alcohol consumption. The regimen combines the standard-of-care antiviral dual therapy of pegylated interferon (a long-acting cytokine that stimulates the innate immune response) and ribavirin (a guanosine analog that interferes with viral RNA synthesis) with polyenylphosphatidylcholine (PPC). PPC is a purified soybean extract rich in polyunsaturated phosphatidylcholines, hypothesized to exert antifibrotic and antioxidant effects by stabilizing hepatocyte membranes and reducing the activation of hepatic stellate cells. A Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT00160316) was initiated to evaluate whether the addition of PPC to standard antiviral therapy could improve histological outcomes in both drinkers and non-drinkers, though the study was ultimately terminated.
