Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pegylated interleukin-11 is a pegylated recombinant human interleukin-11 (rhIL-11) therapeutic being developed by Nansha Biologics in partnership with Avalon Biomedical. The drug consists of an N-terminally truncated IL-11 polypeptide that has been chemically modified through mono-PEGylation with branched PEG moieties (typically 20 kD or 40 kD) at the N-terminus. It acts as an agonist of the interleukin-11 receptor, stimulating megakaryopoiesis and the recovery of platelet counts. The drug is primarily intended for the treatment of chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia, acute radiation sickness, and severe burns. The PEGylation modification is designed to extend the serum half-life of the protein while maintaining therapeutic activity and potentially reducing side effects, such as fluid retention, that are associated with the non-pegylated form (oprelvekin).
