Overview

Pegylated superoxide dismutase (PEG-SOD) is a modified form of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), where polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains are covalently attached to the enzyme. This modification is designed to improve its pharmacokinetic properties, such as prolonging its plasma half-life and potentially enhancing cellular uptake. PEG-SOD functions as a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger by catalyzing the dismutation of the superoxide anion radical (O2-) into molecular oxygen (O2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). It has been extensively investigated in various preclinical and clinical studies for its potential therapeutic applications in conditions characterized by oxidative stress and inflammation. These include acute lung injury, ischemia-reperfusion injuries in organs such as the heart, kidney, and liver, traumatic brain injury, burns, and certain fibrotic conditions. Despite promising research, no approved application in human therapy has been established for PEG-SOD.
