Overview

Pelubiprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the profen class, structurally related to other 2-arylpropionic acids. It acts as a prodrug with relatively selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase‐2 (COX‐2), leading to decreased prostaglandin synthesis and reduced inflammation and pain. Pelubiprofen also inhibits IkB kinase-b (IKK-b), contributing to its anti-inflammatory effects. It is used primarily for the treatment of back pain and osteoarthritis, but has also been investigated for musculoskeletal pain, post-operative trauma, neck–shoulder syndrome, dental pain, rheumatoid arthritis, and fever. Developed in South Korea by Daewon Pharmaceutical (originator Sankyo), it is marketed in Korea and Russia among other countries[7][4][8][2]. Clinical studies have shown that pelubiprofen controlled release formulations are as effective as aceclofenac with fewer adverse events for knee osteoarthritis[9].
