Pemefolacianine is a folate receptor-targeted near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent imaging agent developed by Nanjing Nuoyuan Medical Equipment. It is designed for the intraoperative visualization of tumors that overexpress folate receptor alpha (FRα), most notably ovarian cancer. The molecule consists of a folate ligand conjugated to a cyanine-based fluorescent dye. Upon intravenous administration, the agent selectively binds to FRα on the surface of malignant cells and is internalized, allowing for real-time fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS). This technology enables surgeons to identify small or occult metastatic lesions and more accurately define tumor margins that may be missed under standard white light inspection, potentially improving the rates of complete surgical cytoreduction. Pemefolacianine is currently being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials in China.
