Overview

**Penimepicycline** is an older systemic antibacterial agent and the phenoxymethylpenicillinate salt of pipacycline, a tetracycline also known as mepicycline. The pipacycline moiety inhibits bacterial protein synthesis through the 30S ribosomal subunit, while the phenoxymethylpenicillin moiety contributes beta-lactam antibacterial activity through inhibition of penicillin-binding proteins involved in peptidoglycan cell-wall synthesis. It was historically administered orally or intramuscularly and studied or used for bacterial infections including urological, respiratory, gynecological, and other infections. Historical reports describe bactericidal activity against streptococci and bacteriostatic activity against a range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
