Overview

Penn Microbiome Therapy (PMT) is a specific fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) intervention developed and produced by the University of Pennsylvania. It involves the transfer of a diverse, healthy microbial community from screened donors to a recipient's gastrointestinal tract to restore microbial balance and diversity. The therapy is primarily investigated as a treatment for severe or recurrent *Clostridium difficile* infections (CDI) and as a strategy for the decolonization of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO). By reintroducing a complex population of commensal bacteria, PMT aims to outcompete pathogens through competitive exclusion and restore the intestinal environment to a state that prevents the overgrowth of antibiotic-resistant or pathogenic bacteria.
