Overview

Pentaglobin + meropenem is a combination therapy consisting of Pentaglobin, an immunoglobulin preparation enriched with IgM, and meropenem, a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic. This combination is being investigated for the treatment of severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, including carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), particularly in neutropenic patients. Meropenem acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell death[2][4]. Pentaglobin provides passive immune support via its immunoglobulin content, potentially enhancing host defense mechanisms against infection. The rationale for combining these agents is to leverage both direct antibacterial activity and immune modulation to improve outcomes in severe or resistant infections[6].
