Overview
Pentamycin, also known as fungichromin, is a polyene macrolide antifungal antibiotic derived from Streptomyces pentaticus. It acts primarily by increasing cell membrane permeability in susceptible organisms. Pentamycin exhibits broad-spectrum activity against fungi, protozoa, and some bacteria and is used mainly for the treatment of infectious vaginitis (including vaginal candidiasis and trichomoniasis) as well as mixed infections. It is typically administered locally via vaginal pessaries or tablets and has minimal systemic absorption due to its large molecular size. Pentamycin has also been investigated for use in pulmonary aspergillosis via inhalation. The drug is notable for its efficacy against pathogens resistant to standard treatments and does not adversely affect the normal vaginal flora[1][4][7].
