Pentetate calcium trisodium (Ca-DTPA) is a chelating agent used to treat individuals with known or suspected internal contamination with radioactive transuranic elements such as plutonium, americium, or curium. It works by binding to these radioactive metals in the body and forming stable complexes that are then excreted in the urine. Ca-DTPA is most effective when administered within the first 24 hours after exposure; after this period, its efficacy decreases and zinc-DTPA (Zn-DTPA) may be preferred for continued therapy. The drug does not treat contamination with other radioactive materials like iodine or uranium and does not address complications of radiation exposure itself[1][2][3][5].
