Pentetic acid, also known as diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), is a synthetic polyamino carboxylic acid and a chelating agent with eight coordinate bond-forming sites. It is primarily used in medicine for two main purposes: as a chelator to treat internal contamination with radioactive metals such as plutonium, americium, or curium by binding these metals and promoting their elimination via urine; and in nuclear medicine, where its technetium Tc 99m-labeled form is used for diagnostic imaging of the brain, kidneys (including assessment of renal perfusion and glomerular filtration rate), and lungs. The calcium and zinc salts of pentetic acid are FDA-approved for decorporation therapy following internal contamination with transuranics. Pentetic acid acts by sequestering metal ions through strong chelation, forming stable complexes that are then excreted renally[2][4][5][6][7].
