Penthienate is a synthetic anticholinergic drug with pharmacological actions similar to atropine. It acts primarily by blocking muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, thereby reducing gastric motility and secretion as well as decreasing the motor activity of the intestine. Penthienate is used in the treatment of peptic ulcer and dyspepsia. Its mechanism involves antagonism at muscarinic receptors, leading to decreased vagal stimulation of gastrointestinal smooth muscle and secretory glands[1][4][5]. It belongs to the class of quaternary ammonium compounds within synthetic anticholinergics[3]. The drug has been marketed under brand names such as Monodral and was first launched in 1954 for use as an antispasmodic agent[5].
