Overview

Pentoxifylline is a synthetic methylxanthine derivative used to improve blood flow in patients with peripheral vascular disease, particularly for intermittent claudication caused by chronic occlusive arterial disease of the limbs. It acts as a non-selective phosphodiesterase inhibitor (PDEi), increasing erythrocyte flexibility, reducing blood viscosity, decreasing plasma fibrinogen levels, and inhibiting neutrophil activation and platelet aggregation. These effects improve microcirculatory flow and tissue perfusion. Pentoxifylline also exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Developed by Hoechst and manufactured by Sanofi, it is also investigated for conditions such as diabetic kidney disease and fibrotic disorders.
