Pentoxifylline + vitamin C is a combination therapy consisting of pentoxifylline, a synthetic methylxanthine derivative and non-selective phosphodiesterase inhibitor, and vitamin C (ascorbic acid), an essential water-soluble antioxidant. Pentoxifylline improves blood flow by decreasing blood viscosity, increasing red blood cell flexibility, and enhancing microcirculation. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory and hemorheological effects by increasing intracellular cAMP and cGMP levels. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, protecting tissues from oxidative damage and supporting collagen synthesis. The combination has been studied experimentally for its potential to reduce tissue damage in frostbite models due to their complementary effects on microvascular circulation, inflammation reduction, and tissue preservation[2][3]. While pentoxifylline is approved for intermittent claudication in peripheral arterial disease[3][4], the specific combination with vitamin C is not widely approved but has shown benefit in preclinical studies for frostbite.
