Overview

Pentoxifylline + ursodeoxycholic acid is a combination therapy that has been studied for its protective effects on liver tissue, particularly in radiation-induced liver injury and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This combination works through multiple complementary mechanisms: pentoxifylline exhibits hemorheological, anti-oxidative, and anti-inflammatory properties, while ursodeoxycholic acid reduces potentially toxic hydrophobic bile acids and has anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects. Together, they have been shown to significantly reduce the extent and incidence of focal radiation-induced liver injury (fRILI) when administered post-therapeutically. The combination has also demonstrated effectiveness in decreasing serum inflammatory cytokines like IL-8 and TNF-α in non-alcoholic fatty liver cases.
