Overview

Peony root refers to the dried root of plants in the genus *Paeonia*, most commonly *Paeonia lactiflora* (white peony) and *Paeonia officinalis* or *Paeonia suffruticosa* (red/moutan). Used for over a thousand years in traditional Chinese medicine and other herbal traditions worldwide, it is valued for its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, immunomodulatory and mild sedative properties. The main active compound is paeoniflorin—a glycoside with demonstrated effects on immune regulation and inflammation. Peony root is traditionally used to treat menstrual disorders (cramps/PMS/PCOS), autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis[1][3], blood flow issues including prevention of clotting[1][2], nervous system conditions like anxiety or insomnia[5], muscle cramps/spasms[4][7], headaches/migraines[8][10], liver health support[10] and as an adjunct in formulas for emotional balance. Mechanistically it may block pro-inflammatory chemicals; act as an antioxidant; modulate estrogenic activity; prevent blood clotting; calm nerves; relieve spasms; promote circulation; and support immune function through total glucosides of paeoniflorin (TGP)[1][2]. It is available as raw herb/root slices/powder/capsules/tinctures.
